14th October 2005 The fourth Annual FORCE Awards Dinner took place on Thursday 13th October 2005, with Kenneth Holmes Associates receiving accolades for both the Hope Centre, Hillfields Coventry, and the Helen Ley Care Home development in Blackdown Leamington Spa. The Hope Centre is a Church and multi-use facility which received the FORCE Award for Best Regeneration. The Centre provides facilities for Further Education and Nursery care, with Conference Hall and Café. The original derelict industrial unit has been totally transformed and given new life and purpose for the community. Helen Ley Care Home is a further extension of the original concept for caring for people with Multiple Sclerosis. A forerunner in its field, the Home continues to provide first class facilities in a first class environment. In recognition of this the Helen Ley House was a Finalist in the FORCE Award for Design. To complete an excellent evening, Kenneth Holmes was himself awarded a special recognition for his contribution to the Construction Industry and the community over the last 25 years. |

27th September 2005 Ioannis presented two papers in the 33rd IAHS World Housing Congress in Pretoria, South Africa. Both presentations received great attention from the delegates from some 30 countries and generated several requests for more informtation. The papers presented are available from our office. |

5th August 2005 Ioannis has published his latest work with respect to the optimization of passive solar design for heating dwellings in the ‘Structural Survey’ Journal. Implementation of the concept of passive solar heating design in dwellings has the potential to reduce energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions at little or no cost to the developer but with real benefit to the occupier. The paper is titled "Cost savings by application of passive solar heating” and draws upon alternative approaches to passive solar heating design in dwellings and reaches conclusions based on the application of these different approaches to a real live case study. 15th July 2005 Kenneth Holmes Associates will be represented in the 33rd I.A.H.S. “World Congress on Housing” in September 2005, Pretoria, S. Africa. The Practice's KTP research associate, Ioannis Spanos, will present two papers. The first will focus on the designing of an environmentally conscious village describing potential, constraint, and lessons learned. The second presentation will draw conclusions on the integration of new and innovative design methodologies with respect to sustainability at the design stage. 7th July 2005 The Practice has presented a paper at the first International Conference at Patra, Greece, entitled ‘The Integration of the Renewable Energy Systems into the Building Structures’. Appraisal of state of the art environmental technologies is being incorporated into the design procedure with consequent advantages for the environment and the developers. The paper proposed the evaluation of the numerous possibilities by using a new methodology for the optimization of design. The presentation titled “ Use of ‘Carbon Abatement Relative Balance’ Financial Assessment Methodology for Choosing Alternative Energy Sources for a Retirement Housing Project”. This paper is available from our office. |

17th March 2005 Kenneth Holmes Associates registered to start the ‘Investor in People’ programme. The Practice received a Certificate that records Kenneth Holmes Associates have made a commitment to Coventry & Warwick Chamber of Commerce to work towards investing effectively in all its employees. |

11th March 2005 Kenneth Holmes Associates received an Education in Partnership with Industry Award from North Leamington Community School & Arts College of Warwickshire County Council in providing Quality Work Experience for the College students during Autumn 2004. In addition the Practice continues to offer a limited number of work Experience placements and also acts as a training provider for undergraduate students, a tradition stretching back over many years.

19th November 2004 Coventry Chartered Architects Kenneth Holmes Associates secure major grant from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in conjunction with Coventry University and Developers, Hall Bros under a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). We have the pleasure to announce that the DTI has sponsored the KTP Scheme Coventry University, with Kenneth Holmes Associates, Chartered Architects, and Hall Bros, Building Developers, with the amount of £66K. It is the partnership's aim to develop an environmentally and eco friendly ''village'' in Walsgrave area. The specific project is a ''Retirement Village'', which consists of 45 individual dwellings, together with 133 apartments in a number of blocks and to provide a community hub with all the range of facilities to support the village residents. |
